Audition Details
The scope and variety of our programs is tailored to provide skill-appropriate opportunities for all members. Children entering 1st grade in the fall of the following school year, and those who are older, may be eligible for placement in a performing ensemble. We still hope to hold our Early Childhood Class, but will know more this summer. These classes are not auditioned and are offered to for 4 years old through 1st grade and are designed as an introduction to the world of music and movement.

Audition FAQs

Q. Do I have to live in Carroll County to be in the Chorus?
A. The majority of members are residents of Carroll County, but the Chorus has no residency requirement. We welcome members from all over the immediate Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania area.

Q. What happens at the audition?
A.  After brief introductions of Directors and the auditionee, they will be asked to sing “Happy Birthday.” Next, they may be asked to sing a familiar round, like “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” to determine their melodic independence. (This is not an expectation for the youngest children.) Then there will be a short echo-singing session to ascertain aural pitch matching. An easy game involving reading very simple musical examples is the final activity.

Q. What if my child doesn’t know how to read any music?
A. This would only be asked of older students and the music reading does not determine acceptance into the group. It is a tool for the directors to help determine the level of difficulty for the next season’s pieces.

Q. How long does it take?
A. The time spent with the directors is typically between ten to fifteen minutes.

Q. Do we need to sign up in advance?
A. Yes, we must ask you to sign up in advance here. Email us, though, if you are just now finding out about our expired audition date or if you are unavailable.

Q. Is there a charge for the audition?
A. The audition is free. If accepted, tuition rates do apply.

Q. Will my child be told that night if he/she is accepted?
A. No. Students will be contacted through email by the end of June or August, depending on when the audition takes place.
